Behind the Mask: Healing Identity Through Art

“Papier-Mâché Mask-Making Workshop for Veterans & First Responders

Step into a safe, creative space where expression replaces pressure, and healing begins with your own hands. In this 2–3 session trauma-informed workshop, participants will design, sculpt, and paint symbolic masks using papier-mâché — a powerful process that gently reveals the layers of identity shaped by service, trauma, and recovery.

WHAT TO EXPECT :

  • Hands-on guidance in sculpting and painting your own mask

  • Meaningful discussions on identity, dual roles, and the “masks we wear”

  • Optional journaling or naming your piece to deepen personal reflection

No art experience is needed. Just bring yourself — as you are.

Why Art? The Science of Creative Healing

"Art as Therapy – Rebuilding through Expression"

Decades of neurological and psychological research confirm what many have experienced firsthand: art heals. According to findings from YourBrainOnArt.com engaging in the arts:

  • Decreases cortisol levels (stress hormone)

  • Increases dopamine and serotonin (mood and motivation)

  • Improves brain plasticity, aiding trauma recovery

  • Encourages neurogenesis and cognitive function

  • Supports emotional processing in non-verbal ways

For veterans and first responders who often struggle to articulate traumatic experiences, the arts offer a non-threatening, empowering outlet.
